Reviews
Definitely deserved a better review than 6.5
*A no spoiler review so this will be pointless for anyone looking for confirmation/discussion after watching.*

Overall: Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, having no idea what it was about when I clicked on the icon in Netflix, so was slightly disappointed to find it given such a mediocre score on IMDb.

I will not give away the plot, suffice it to say that you'll have stay on your toes to follow the hints and clues. On a second watch, they are quite cleverly there!

The acting is first rate! The lead role's character and background are sufficiently fleshed out and approachable, and the majority of the science is quite convincing.

Moreover, like much of the best speculative fiction, the premise raises some philosophical and moral questions: In this case, regarding the application of cutting edge technology.

While not entirely original in plot (but then, what film truly is in the 21st century?) the adaptation and implementation makes for a worthy and memorable ride with some visceral and quite disturbing moments, not to mention a spot of exercise for the old noggin.

Boring!
A 6.4 rating? Are you serious? More like .64.

I found this one on Netflix and it was rated 5 stars (but then again, just about every film on Netflix is rated 5 stars). It's half a star at best.

The film is confusing and incredibly boring. I was trying hard not to fall asleep but eventually gave up with maybe 15 minutes left.

I found it very difficult to follow what was going on. I also never understood exactly what the Other Life product did? It reminded me of Total Recall where you implant memories, but I'm not sure, and most importantly, I do not care!

There is no action whatsoever. Just a bunch of boring flashbacks and silly dialog.

My advice is to avoid this turkey.

Good near-future dark techno-thriller
I was happy to get much more than I expected. All movie-making aspects are well met! Being one of my favorite subject, I would like to talk more about the subject of movie and it's dystopian context. The movie gives science-driven insight into some negative implications of interdisciplinary technologies-driven Western civilization. Those are slowly becoming part of our everyday reality in the hidden negative way. It's already proved through last century how the new technologies come promising us better life but, as shown in the movie, are eventually misused the other way around by egoistic/selfless corporate-driven entities ending in variety of horror scenarios.

Being a part of this recent and "hungry" subject, explored by likes of P. K. Dick's novels-inspired movies and e.g. Black Mirror series. This piece concentrates on one of many sensitive implications of those forthcoming technologies. In this case combined of molecular biology, genetic pharmacy, various cognitive sciences and computer technologies like VR, "neuro-simulations", bio-3D printing, etc. Ultimately ending with horror scenarios like being imprisoned in ones' own mind; w/o means of escaping or ending it, not in any way.

What if "They" shell really take our freedom, our choice, as it's already happening - slowly, subtly and subliminally? That's I believe why movies like this are important.

Good Original Sci-Fi if You Haven't Seen Playtest
OtherLife is the story of a piece of software that can transport you into a dream-like world (like Total Recall). The movie discusses the implications of the software through the 2 developers' secret projects with the software.

For a low-budget science fiction movie there is a lot of positive things to point out. I was personally impressed with the visual effects and the courage to tell the story through the language of cinematography (dolly zooms, Dutch angles, color-grading, etc.). When it comes to acting and sound design I found the movie did a decent job and it never felt like an amateur low-budget movie to me.

Unfortunately there were 2 things that annoyed me about the movie: Firstly, the movie takes ideas from existing sci-fi which makes the story unoriginal and predictable (to some extend). It reminded me in particular of 2 Black Mirror episodes; White Christmas and Playtest. If you haven't seen Black Mirror I think you will find this more original, less predictable and consequently enjoy it more. Secondly, the protagonist is a very smart woman working on the software, but she only appears to be smart when working on the software and not in any other part of her life. I don't want to give any examples of this since that would spoil the plot. If you don't expect to share these issues then I believe you will like or maybe even love this movie.

In conclusion i enjoyed watching the movie, and I am surprised by the low rating (my ratings are usually 1-2 points under the average). Despite a few issues I will definitely keep my eyes open for this directors next project.

To me OtherLife is a decent movie which amounts to a 6/10 in my rating distribution.

Good Concept, Bad Execution..
Ren Amari is the driven inventor of a revolutionary new drug. OtherLIfe expands the brain's sense of time and creates virtual reality directly in the user's mind. With OtherLife, mere seconds in real life feel like hours or days of exciting adventures. As Ren and her colleagues race around the clock to launch OtherLife, the government muscles in to use the drugs as a radical solution to prison overcrowding. They will create virtual cells where criminals serve long sentences in just minutes of real time. When Ren resists, she finds herself an unwilling guinea pig trapped in a prison cell in her mind. She must escape before she descends into madness, and then regain control of OtherLife before others suffer the same fate. Otherlife is a film that although it packs a great concept and takes plot points from films such as Matrix and Total Recall about dreams and reality it does such a poor job with it for example there's so many sequences where Ren is taking this drug and after let's say the first 15 minutes? I was tired a lot and as much of a good job Jessica De Gouw might have done the film just doesn't justify itself or it's genre instead it's boring, the dialogue is awful and the whole brother situation goes nowhere, a very disappointing film i must say. (2/10)

A prove that you don't need big budgets to make good sci-fi
When I first saw an announcement for this movie I thought it would be just another sci-fi movie with a decent, but not that original story and a smaller budget. Nevertheless I decided to watch it and then I realized how much mistaken I was. This movie brings one of the more original stories I've seen in sci-fi the last couple of years. Combined with an excellent cinematography and good acting this movie lifts itself up. I know many people who don't like to watch movies with smaller budgets, mostly foreign movies, not produced in Hollywood, but then again, this movie proves you don't need to have the big budgets to get full potential.

Very well done moderate budget science fiction
Just a note, this is NOT a television show, it is a stand alone movie. It is a very well done, moderate budget, stand-alone SF film. It does have a very standard SF plot line but it is done so well and with enough originality that it definitely stands up. I was engaged in the story through the entire film, it is shot beautifully, the actors are all good, the set design, productions values, music, editing and script are all very professional and high value. This is NOT some crappy low budget student film.

Definitely worth a watch.

A superbly understated brain-bending film
If you're looking for whiz-bang, this isn't the film for you.

It's very much a character-driven movie, with the tech and special effects limited to a few screens of moving-mandala formulation. Scenery varies from sufficient to spectacular.

The excitement's in the ideas - none of them preachy in presentation - and in the acting. Questions of life and death and pulling the plug blend with the technological conundrums like: just because we can, does it mean we should, and where do we draw the line on interfering with personal autonomy via tampering with brain chemicals? The lead actor, Jessica De Gouw, carries the script's weight seamlessly, with solid but unexciting support.

An exciting entry in Australia's burgeoning film industry.

Another great Aussie indie flick.
This film reminds me of a cross between Remomory and Infinity Chamber.

It's an excellent novice-directed film with stunning cinematography.

For a low budget indie flick, it sure packs a punch.

The acting was very good, especially from Jessica De Gouw.

My only critiques were the score (was too obvious), and the writing could have been tighter, especially with the pace being so slow.

Other than that, certainly worth seeing if you're into sci- fi/mystery.

It's a well deserved 8/10 from me

If you like Black Mirror, look no further.
Like a chapter of Black Mirror, this is a near-future sci-fi story that has good acting, action, innovative sets, and a great plot. Keeps your brain engaged and entertained. Wish it could have been a mini-series because there are a lot of interesting subplots to explore. If you like this movie and haven't yet seen Black Mirror, please find it and enjoy.
