a really good movie
Ive always liked this one, it gives kids a chance to experience "playing soldiers" if they cant do so, due to their position in life or otherwise. Besides the fact that when i first viewed this film, RENTED at 8 yrs old, I was somewhat like this. But thats a different story. The cast is excellent, music, acting, dialogue, its all very good and true. I loved this film, eventhough I love all films, I suggest you see it whenever you can. It has meaning, and is playful in many ways. Thank you.

Very innovative considering it's from 1976!
I think this is an excellent movie...good clean fun and there isn't near enough of that on the screen these days! I love the music, (I have always liked Paul Williams' music) the dancing, the kids AND the pedal cars! All in all a great movie. Great costuming, too. It's hard to get pre-pubescent girls to look like vamps but those costumes did a lot in that direction.

The only part that I didn't like was the "Fat Sam" character whose "New Yawk" accent was just a little bit overdone. But I think they did a little play on that when Fat Sam said the word "personally" & Tallulah was making fun of his pronunciation!

It's a shame more of these kids didn't go on to become stars. Maybe their acting wasn't top notch but some of those faces were "wow"! Scott Biao & Jodie Foster are the only two who seem to have went anywhere with their talents.

Fair warning: The "Michael Jackson" in this movie is not the "Michael Jackson" formerly of "The Jackson Five" & known for his "Thriller" video & "other things". It's a totally different person.

Get a life!!!!
For anyone who sees this film as sinister or as a paedophiles dream GET A LIFE!!!! It was made in the 70's when we weren't politically correct and living was fun! What has happened to us that we can't see a film with children in it without thinking that it was made for an ulterior motive? Enjoy the film for what it is. I saw this film for the first time when I was about 9, loved it then and still do (I'm now 34!) It's harmless fun, something you would have loved to have been involved in had you been given the chance. All those splurge guns and pedal cars, think about it, it would have been great fun! And that's what you should remember when you watch it, it's great FUN! I have 2 children who ABSOLUTELY love this film as much as I do and I have no qualms whatsoever about letting them watch this. Just remember you were young once, watch this film, forget about everything, and recapture your youth!!!!

A must see for those who are tired of the same-old same-old
I'm not sure how this movie ever become so obsolete. It's been a favorite of mine since childhood. With a clever twist on the mobster genre, this film lights up the screen, accompanied by a charming soundtrack by Paul Williams. Don't let the all pre-adolescent cast scare you away. Scott Baio and Jodie Foster are perfect! Give this film a chance--you won't regret it!

Jodi Foster is to die for even at the age of 12
This is just one of those movies that as you watch it, you are simply mesmerized by the sheer brilliance that is Alan Parker, how he ever got the OK to make this picture is proof alone of his brilliance. The music by Paul Williams and everything else that makes this truly a great film.

Offbeat musical hits the right notes
Alan Parker's quirky musical takes typical Prohibition-era gangster-flick tropes and remixes them into a children's comedy adventure with some seriously catchy songs. The outcome is certainly daft and often disjointed, but never dull. Scott "Chachi" Baio got his big break as the titular hero, a streetwise but stone-broke boxing promoter. He finds love interest in Blousey Brown (Florrie Dugger), while frequenting a speakeasy run by wiseguy Fat Sam (John Cassisi). The show is thoroughly stolen by Jodie Foster, as Sam's girlfriend Tallulah, who at age 13 is already showing more acting nous than many can muster by 30. Sadly, the same can't be said for the rest of the cast (all kids, a noteworthy feat) and some of the interplay is clumsy and forced. The film's real strength is in its musical numbers. You'll be humming them for days, whether you want to or not. The adult singers' voices don't always marry well with the babyfaced performers on screen, but judged by their own merits they're genuinely good and make the film well worth a look. You'll need to suspend your disbelief for an hour and a half – the film won't do that for you – but if you do, you're rewarded by an enjoyable romp that affectionately takes on a genre reluctant to laugh at itself, and opens it up to a wider audience: if you like gangster-noir, you'll appreciate the parody; if you hate gangster-noir, you'll love the deprecation. 3/5

A Great Movie for kids and people who like or enjoy kids
I saw this as an adult for the first time, with 2 of my adult brothers, and we all wanted one of those pedal cars. I have shown this movie to my daughter and nieces, all of them loved it, and have recently shown it to my 3 1/2 year old grandson, who demonstrates the unbelievably energetic and excited response that only a young child can present. He talked first of the splurge guns that "shoot pies" and then he discovered the cars that are pedaled. He now is no longer as gung-ho about shooting regular guns and 'wants one like in the movie that shoots pies.' Movies like this would not be made today because all of the things that make this movie a genuine rarity – the spoof of the gangster movies, the non sexual content, the lack of violence, and the spoofing of the insanity of violence are all things that have gone by the wayside. I doubt that you could get that many kids that are under 16 to participate in it without having sex & violence, which is what they are exposed to now-days. In the 70's kids up to and older than 16 were still considered kids and were still allowed to be kids. Now even prepubescent kids try to act like and many are treated like they are adults. This movie is a fun movie for anyone who would rather see good clean fun instead of sex & violence. The people who think that the dancers costumes & dances are too sexy, are probably the same ones who buy or make clothes for toddlers, preschoolers, & early elementary school aged girls, that make them look like little prostitutes. It is unlikely that anyone could make another film like this musical gangster spoof that would be as good as or as valuable as this film is. If you would rather have pencils poked in you ears or your eyes cut out that to see this movie, then you have already shown the type of person you are. If you see this movie as anything more than a musical gangster spoof acted by children and for children, then you are spending entirely too much time in the gutter and you should be ashamed of yourself. This is no more & no less than a feel good movie for people who lie kids or enjoy them.

A cute and enjoyable movie-almost to cute
This is a very cute and enjoyable movie, quite possibly the only one in a very small sub-genre in the genre of gangster films-a musical gangster movie cast entirely with children. The cast is notable principally by the presence of Jodie Foster (as a side note, this was released the same year as was Taxi Driver!) and Scott Baio, the musical score was done by Paul Wiliams (who was nominated for an Oscar for his efforts here) and the costumes are quite nice. One thing about the music: I've seen this several times and I still can't be sure if the cast is singing or if the singing is dubbed. I think it's dubbed, as the numbers are almost stiltedin nature. Still fun-just put your brain on neutral and enjoy. Well worth watching.

great fun
I remember my father announcing a family plan to see this movie the year it came out, when I was 9. I didn't want to go--a gangster movie with kids? I thought it would be scary, or worse, boring. But the decision had been made, and I reluctantly went along to the theater. As it turned out, my father was right to take us: "Bugsy Malone" became one of my favorite childhood movies. My brother and I were given the soundtrack LP for Christmas that year (I still have it), and we learned all the songs.

I've since seen the movie as a grownup, and I still think it's very well-made. It wasn't until I was older that I could appreciate the acting, and the sophisticated production design (though I knew when I first saw the movie that it had a very clever script). My only quibble is the filmmakers' decision to have adults sing all the songs--it's a bit bizarre to hear grownup voices coming out of children, and after a while you start to notice that the voices sound the same, since they didn't cast different singers for each character (Paul Williams himself does most of the vocal work). It makes the film feel more low-budget than it should.

Mickey Dolenz directed a stage version of the film in London years later, which I was hoping had all-singing kids, but apparently the songs were pre-recorded. High schools now perform the show, however, so at last the voices will match.

Any kid that's interested in old Hollywood should be given a chance to see this film.
